World Cancer Day!
From the desk of founder Laurel Moring:
Here we are, a year later and it’s World Cancer Day again. 2017 marks the first time that I am not spending the day getting a Light the Night team setup, and it feels a little… sad. I have so many wonderful memories from my time spent working with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, in honour of the Dear Jack Foundation and Andrew. I wrestled with the decision in 2016 as I had just started MFEO Matches and was in the throws of fundraising for us, as well as putting in as much time and energy as I could, outside of my job and my family life. Ultimately, I decided to go ahead with my fifth year captaining the LTN team, and made some lofty goals to end my work there on a high note. We reached those goals and then some. In our final year we hit $20K and $25K raised over a four year period, and held the most successful Ink For a Cure event ever. It was an amazing way to say goodbye to the organization that started all of this philanthropic work for me in the first place. The experience I gained with those LTN teams taught me almost everything I know about fundraising, event organizing, and running a successful team of like-minded individuals. I cannot say enough good things about starting my path there.
So today, as I write this, I find myself a little sad, a little nostalgic, and wondering if I’m making the right decision. In my heart of hearts I know I am. With baby number three on the way and life getting inherently busier in my personal life as our boys get older, I knew that to help MFEO Matches grow in to the organization I want it to be, I had to let something go. While it wasn’t an easy decision, I know it was the right one, and so today and for this entire year, I can focus all my attention on MFEO Matches.
We have one confirmed event on the horizon, exactly two months from today, which will be officially announced soon. We also have a potential benefit event for us in the works for the early summer. Right now however, what we’re working on is fundraising. Our GoFundMe is still open, as we have even more costs this year than we did last year. We also have a Bonfire t-shirt fundraiser going. There you can purchase an MFEO Matches shirt, which will not only raise awareness about the organization when you wear it, but the profits of your purchase get donated to the organization! It’s really a win-win. That campaign only runs til February 16th, so if you’re interested please be sure to act fast.
Please share how you’re spending your #WorldCancerDay with us on social media. We love to see your big hearts at work. Thank you to each one of you that has supported us over the past year. We can’t wait to see where the next year takes us with your help.
